The news release published by the Government of Canada states that international students in Canada will not be constrained to working a maximum of 20 hours. After approval, students with work authorization on their study permit can balance additional working hours while maintaining their studies. This includes working on- or off-campus jobs, and co-op or internships.
Sean Fraser, the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced the lift of this restriction to help the economy and businesses in the country sustain better post-pandemic growth. Though this is a temporary lift between November 15th, 2022, and December 31st, 2023, this will help international students gain more opportunities in the workforce. It also reflects the important role of international students as they combat the country’s labour shortage.
Compared from September 2021 to this year, this is the most non-resident visitors arriving to Canada. As well, the number of international students in Canada with work permits have more than doubled since 2015. With more than 500,000 students eligible to work, this might indicate a rise in competition for securing your next job.
